Një „encoder“ lexon dhe kupton hyrjen, një „decoder“ gjeneron daljen fjalë pas fjale. Përkthimi është shembulli klasik (T5, modeli origjinal Transformer). GPT-të përdorin vetëm decoder, BERT vetëm encoder.
