Disa komanda (cd, echo, export, source) janë pjesë e vetë shell-it — „builtins“. Të tjerat (ls, grep, git) janë programe të veçanta në disk. cd duhet të jetë builtin, sepse një program i jashtëm s'mund ta ndryshojë dosjen e shell-it.
